Frequently Asked Questions

  • What does Habitat for Humanity do?

Habitat for Humanity builds simple, affordable homes with and for families, couples and individuals in need of housing. We provide an interest free mortgage loan to enable the family to afford purchasing the newly, volunteer-built home.

  • How can I get involved?

Habitat is funded entirely by donations and staffed largely with volunteers. We are always in need of individuals willing to pitch in to help a neighbor in need. Visit our How You Can Help section to find out ways to donate or volunteer. Or call 330 263-1713

  • If I were to donate funds, how is my money used?

Administrative costs are covered by the Habitat Store revenue so that 100% of cash donations can be used to build homes. All contributions are used where most needed, for construction materials, building permits, subcontractor fees or other construction expenses.

  • What is your organization's privacy policy?

Our organization takes our privacy policy seriously and takes steps to protect and ensure the safety of our supporters. We do not sell or otherwise disclose information about our volunteers or supporters outside of our immediate organization. This policy has no exceptions. We do not sell or exchange your information with any other organizations, public, private or nonprofit. For more detailed information visit our Privacy Policy page.

  • Are Habitat houses free?

No. In addition to the hundreds of hours of sweat equity that homeowners put into the building of their homes, they purchase their homes through a 0% interest mortgage provided by Habitat.

  • How are homeowners selected?

Families, couples or individuals in need of decent shelter apply to local Habitat affiliates. The Homeowner Selection Committee assesses each applicant’s level of need, their willingness to become partners in the program and their ability to repay a low-interest mortgage loan. Neither race nor religion is a factor in choosing who receives a Habitat home.

  • Can I volunteer even if I can’t build?

Yes. Habitat needs volunteers to work on many tasks, including working on special events, mentoring families, fundraising, preparing mailings, and providing coffees and lunches at the construction site. Call our office for more information.

Our mission & History

"Habitat for Humanity in Wayne County, Inc. works in partnership with God and people from all walks of life to develop communities with God's people in need by building and renovating houses. Habitat in Wayne County is committed to partnership in which the self-esteem of the partner family is enhanced and each family can become active contributors to their respective communities."

Our History

Habitat for Humanity in Wayne County, Inc. is a nonprofit Christian ministry. We are in service to God and people of all faiths, and all walks of life to help meet the long term need of having affordable housing available to low income families. We were officially accepted as an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International in 1986.

Habitat for Humanity International was founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller in Americus, Georgia. It is now operating in over 1500 North American cities and more than 75 countries worldwide. While over 800,000 homes have been built by Habitat around the world, here locally our affiliate is quickly nearing its 70th home. We are excited by our continued growth, as well as the growing support of our communities who share our mission of eliminating substandard housing.

The homes we build are sold to the partner families based upon appraised market value. The families then repay a first mortgage in the approximate amount of $60,000.00. The monthly mortgage payments are tailored to fit the families' income. And though the homes are simple and decent they are almost always a great improvement from the housing they once occupied.
We rely heavily on volunteers in the construction of the houses to keep the building costs low. The volunteers, who provide us and our families with their time and talents, gain so much from seeing their labor rewarded with helping to provide a family with a home. The partner families gain not just from the time spent with their fellowmen as they complete the required 300 hours of sweat equity per household adult, but also as they successfully complete classroom requirements and financial counseling. Our affiliate strongly supports providing all the "tools" necessary to make sure the families are prepared to handle the expense and responsibility of owning a home.
